Relax and enjoy your vacation in an idyllic island beach
house from the turquoise edge of
the Caribbean--rent the private and unique home on Devers Bay known
as "Mampoo Hill". This is the perfect "get away" for those who enjoy
an unusually beautiful setting that offers leisure and privacy in close
touch with the out-of-doors.
THE
HOUSE Mampoo Hill, located on the southwest part of St. John,
is a contemporary beach house of redwood and island stone, designed by
one of the island's most prominent architects. This open air, two
bedroom, two bath house was designed to take advantage of its
view and proximity to the Caribbean. The huge, Air Conditioned master bedroom contains wireless internet, cable tv, a queen futon couch, a sumptuous king-size bed, sitting area, ceiling fans, a two-sink
bathroom and dressing room. The Air Conditioned guest room, with its twin beds made up as a king-size bed, has cable tv, a ceiling fan, and a full bath with
a pedestal sink.
For
those who want to see a beautiful sunset or relax in fresh water, a four
person spa on the upper deck overlooks the bay, two undeveloped islands,
and a portion of St. Thomas. A multitude of chairs, couches and chaise
lounges abound on the upper and lower decks and living room to take advantage
of the ocean, the coconut palms and the many birds that visit this well-nested
beach house. The kitchen and dining areas also have gorgeous views
of the Caribbean.
UNUSUAL FEATURES
RIGHT
ON THE WATER Few homes on this island are right on the water like
Mampoo Hill is. And because St. John is a small island (three quarters
of which is natural park land), most homes are on quarter or half acre
lots-- Mampoo Hill, however, sits on a full acre of gorgeous property,
lovingly attended by a private gardener.
FANTASTIC SNORKELING IN
THE BACK YARD Devers Bay grows lovely coral which, in turn, attracts
beautiful fish to be viewed when snorkeling. In addition, coral in
the U.S. Virgin Islands is protected so boats cannot come into Devers Bay--making
it a very private bay with great coral.
AN
ARTFUL HOUSE Mampoo Hill was conceived and developed by an artist
and her husband (who was the director of Winterthur Museum). With
artistic sensitivity and sensibility, they took great care to take advantage
of the views, trade winds, and natural beauty surrounding the house.
Today, the property retains most of its original silver Mampoo trees (after
which the house was named), sea grapes, turpentine trees, and yellow and
pink tree orchids. Hibiscus, bougainvillea, lilies and coconut palms
were added later. The current owners of Mampoo Hill (another artist
and an attorney) have added two arbors, various gardens and painstakingly
maintained the ambience, environment and philosophy of Mampoo Hill--casual
relaxation through extraordinary and serene beauty.
